A young Indian maiden born
to mountains old and worn.
The Smokey Mountains on high
in a place that touches the sky.

Soon her very happiness
would turn to sadness.
Her young heart would break
for a forbidden love's sake.

Into her life one day, he came
their love knowing no shame,
but it was her white uncle's son
whose heart she had won.

Her valiant heart bled
as tears her eyes shed
for the love of this man
not born on Indian land.

And his love was noble and bold
as this young maiden he longed to hold.
Although they knew it wrong
theirs was a love pure and strong.

As their love continued to grow,
their parent's shame began to show.
Their love was forbidden,
and it's fate already written.

Secret meetings under the night's sky
their love's passion flying on high.
Neither accepting defeat,
they continued to meet.

But one fateful night
by the sky's starry light
past the mountains, at the end of the trail
the young man's horse stumbled and fell.

Throwing the young man into the river so deep
struggling, but his life he could not keep.
Standing in the moonlight in wait
the Indian maiden soon knew his fate.

Now she cries in the wind
her tears a message send
to her own true love
who is with the Great Spirit above.

The Indian woman now rides alone each day
and to the Great Spirit her soul prays
that soon they will be together
as their love lives forever.
